Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel<\/strong>\u00a0( 31 October 1875\u00a0\u2013 15 December 1950) was an Indian\u00a0barrister\u00a0and statesman, one of the leaders of the\u00a0Indian National Congress\u00a0and one of the founding fathers of the\u00a0Republic of India. He was a social leader who played a leading role in the country’s\u00a0struggle for independence\u00a0and guided its\u00a0integration\u00a0into a united, independent nation. In\u00a0India\u00a0and elsewhere, he was often addressed as\u00a0Sardar,\u00a0which means\u00a0Chief in\u00a0Hindi,\u00a0Urdu\u00a0and Persian.<\/span><\/p>\n

He was raised in the countryside of\u00a0Gujarat. Patel was employed in successful practice as a lawyer. He subsequently organised peasants from\u00a0Kheda,Borsad, and\u00a0Bardoli\u00a0in Gujarat in\u00a0non-violent\u00a0civil disobedience\u00a0against oppressive policies imposed by the\u00a0British Raj; in this role, he became one of the most influential leaders in Gujarat. He rose to the leadership of the\u00a0Indian National Congress, in which capacity he would organise the party for the elections held in 1934 and 1937, as well as continue to promote the\u00a0Quit India Movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the first\u00a0Home Minister\u00a0and\u00a0Deputy Prime Minister of India, Patel organised relief for\u00a0refugees fleeing\u00a0from\u00a0Punjab\u00a0and\u00a0Delhi\u00a0and led efforts to restore peace across the nation. Patel took charge of the task to forge a united India by integrating into the newly independent nation those\u00a0British colonial provinces”allocated” to India. Besides those provinces under direct British rule, approximately 565 self-governing\u00a0princely states\u00a0had been released from Britishsuzerainty\u00a0by the\u00a0Indian Independence Act 1947. Through both frank diplomacy as well an option to deploy military force, Patel would persuade almost every princely state to accede to India. Patel’s commitment to national integration in the newly independent country was total and uncompromising, earning him the sobriquet\u00a0“Iron Man of India”. He is also affectionately remembered as the\u00a0“Patron saint of India’s civil servants”\u00a0for having established the\u00a0modern all-India services\u00a0system. He is also called the\u00a0Unifier of India.<\/span><\/p>\n
