Case Study on Self-Appraisal

Institutional Practice of Faculty Self-Appraisal for Quality Enhancement

Introduction

The institution has established a structured Self-Appraisal System as an Internal Quality Assurance Cell to evaluate and enhance the performance of faculty members. The Self-Appraisal process is coordinated by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and is conducted at the end of every academic year.

A committee consisting of the Principal, IQAC Coordinator, and Heads of the Departments oversees the entire process. The IQAC issues a Self-Appraisal Booklet to all faculty members, which captures academic, research, administrative, and professional contributions during the academic year. The completed self-appraisal forms are submitted to the IQAC Coordinator, consolidated, and forwarded to the Head of the Institution for review.

The Principal, as the Head of the Institution, provides comments, feedback, and suggestions based on the appraisal, which helps faculty members improve teaching effectiveness and overall quality of education.

Objectives of Self-Appraisal

  1. To collect structured feedback on the performance of individual faculty members.
  2. To encourage self-reflection and bring positive changes in teaching–learning behaviour.
  3. To provide reliable performance data to the Head of the Institution for academic planning.
  4. To support the professional growth and development of faculty members.
  5. To facilitate career advancement and promotional goals of faculty members.

Description of the Practice

Self-Appraisal is considered a vital tool to measure the performance of faculty members and to optimally utilize their academic and professional potential within the institution. The appraisal system evaluates faculty performance systematically with respect to subject delivery, research contributions, student mentoring, and institutional responsibilities.

The process focuses not only on assessing current performance but also on identifying future potential for individual and collective development. In recent years, the appraisal process has been referred to by various terms such as performance appraisal, performance review, and performance evaluation, which is been done by Head of the Institution, emphasizing its role in continuous quality improvement.

Through this mechanism, faculty members gain clarity on their strengths, areas for improvement, and merit-based performance, thereby fostering a culture of accountability and excellence.

Institutional Policy on Self-Appraisal

  1. The IQAC conducts Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) on relevant academic and pedagogical topics by inviting subject experts.
  2. Faculty members are motivated and encouraged to present and publish research papers in reputed journals.
  3. Financial support is provided to faculty members for research publication and academic participation.
  4. Student feedback is collected subject-wise for every academic year to assess teaching effectiveness.
  5. Faculty members are encouraged to utilize real-world examples and experiential learning methods in classroom teaching.
