The Department of Life Science, Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain First Grade College , KGF organized an educational visit to Gandhi Krishi Vigyana Kendra (GKVK), University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru, on 7th August 2026.
The main objective of the visit was to provide with practical exposure to the applications of biotechnology in horticulture, plant tissue culture, mushroom cultivation and biofertilizer technology. The visit helped students relate the theoretical concepts learned in classrooms to their practical applications in agriculture, plant propagation, mushroom cultivation and sustainable crop production.
The students gained an understanding of the major stages involved in micro propagation:
- Selection of suitable plant material or explants
- Surface sterilization
- Preparation of culture medium
- Inoculation under aseptic conditions
- Shoot multiplication
- Root induction
- Hardening and acclimatization
- Transfer of plants to soil or growing conditions
The students were able to understand the importance of maintaining aseptic conditions to prevent microbial contamination.
One of the major highlights of the visit was learning about plant tissue culture.
